Earth Hour broke a world record this year

On last Saturday, March 25, 2017 the Earth Hour campaign took place around the globe arranged by the World Wildlife Fund (WWF). Thousands of organizations and millions of people in 187 countries turned the light off at 20:30 as a symbolic act to attract the attention to ecological problems of the planet.

Environment Day 2017

Environment Day is celebrated in Ukraine on the third Saturday of April since 1998 according to the Order of President of Ukraine “About the Environment Day” № 855/98. On this day public organizations hold activities and events aimed at improvement of environmental state, cleaning of water sources, landscape gardening, preservation of protected objects and sharing the ecological knowledge. Initially, the holiday was established to celebrate the Stockholm environment conference, which became one of the most important in the history of environmental movement. On this day, UNEP (United Nations Environment Network) was established – the ecological program of the UNO which is the main organizer and ideologist of the Environment Day. In 2017, Environment Day in Ukraine falls on April 15.  

On April 1 the World Bird Day is celebrated in Ukraine

Every year, since 1906, April 1 is celebrated as the World Bird Day, which is held within the UNESCO program “A Human and a Biosphere”. Exactly on that day the International convention on birds protection was signed and since then April 1 is not only a day of signing of Convention but also the World Bird Day.

Danube biosphere reserve joins the world ecology campaign Earth Hour

On March 25, 2017, Ukraine will join the international ecological initiative and hold a large-scale republican social and ecological campaign Earth Hour, which aim is to attract the attention to climate change problem.

    International campaign Earth Hour started in 2007; its founder is World Wildlife Fund (WWF).
      This year, on Saturday, March 25 at 20.30 people around the world turn the light off for an hour, the Earth Hour, to show the necessity of united efforts for preservation of nature of our planet.

   Besides the symbolic turn off the light for 60 minutes, the campaign emphasizes the necessity of daily actions of every citizen aimed at preservation of environment, rational use of natural resources for solving the problem of climate change and achievement of harmony with nature.
    In addition, this year’s Earth Hour in Ukraine will emphasize the expansion of conservation territories, which is one of top priorities of Ministry of Natural Resources.

February 2 - World Wetlands Day

           Convention about wetlands that have an international significance, mainly as a habitat for swimming birds (known as “Ramsar Convention” named after the city of establishment – Ramsar in Iran) started its countdown on February 2, 1971. Ukraine renewed its membership in Convention in 1996 and is among 169 countries – Parties of the Convention. In 2017, Secretariat of Ramsar Convention suggested to celebrate the World Wetlands Day with the motto “Wetlands for decrease of impact of natural disasters”.

In this day the world celebrates the International Day of Climate. This holiday was established in response to the call to become meteorologists climate protection as a particularly important resource that determines the well-being of present and future generations. It should be noted that climate protection is probably one of the most important problems of humanity today. The main problems that lead to irreversible climate change on the planet, is increasing concentrations of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. For the first time this phenomenon was discussed at the global level in 1992 - the so-called Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro.

Renovated tourist information centre opens doors in the Ukrainian Danube Delta

The renovated Tourist Information Centre of the Danube Biosphere Reserve in Vylkove officially opened doors. The centre has been expanded with new exhibits and equipment. The renovation was part of the project "Climate Proofing the Danube Delta" and was carried out with the assistance of "Caparol Ukraine". The Tourist Information Centre of the Danube Biosphere Reserve first opened doors exactly 14 years ago, on Sept. 1, 2000. Every year, it is visited by about 2,000 tourists,
